Wedding Snapshot — Barefoot in the Sand and Boogie All Night Long

Shannon and Ché Johnson WeddingMy husband and I always knew we would get married barefoot in the sand on a sunny island and decided on Bermuda - our favorite island. We got engaged on my birthday and only a few weeks later, had chosen a date and started to plan. Although I have a career in event planning and knew I would plan my own wedding, I needed advice and guidance on where to start and all the other many questions I needed answered. I found Bermuda Travel on the Bermuda Tourism site and gave them a call. I spoke with the company owner, Linda Mitchell, who I immediately knew we would want to work with. We had a long conversation about travel, where our guests would stay and the best location to have our wedding. She gave me vendor contacts and referred an on island wedding planner to help us. Needless to say, my husband and I still keep in close contact with Linda. She helped us so much and was a pleasure and invaluable to work with.

For our pre-wedding celebration we boarded M/V Venetian for a 6-hour cruise around the island, snorkeling, music, drinks and lots of fun. This is one of the most memorable activities of our visit and our guests are still talking about it a year later. The staff was the best and the yacht was breathtakingly beautiful. We literally felt like King and Queen or the stars in a really hot music video.

We decided to have our wedding at Elbow Beach Resort and it was perfection. The surf lapped at our feet as we said "I do". We dined on world-class food at Cafe Lido as we also danced and celebrated under the moon and the stars. We continued the celebration with an exclusive late night dance-until-you-can't-dance-any-more party at The Deep, our own private nightclub experience.

—Shannon and Ché Johnson - July 2008

The beauty of Bermuda as a wedding destination - and as a popular destination to renew wedding vows, is the sheer number of incredible places to tie the knot. "The spectacular setting of a tranquil beach, a park overlooking the ocean, lush private hotel gardens, or under a Bermuda moongate overlooking the harbor are but a few choices of memorable spots," says Linda Mitchell of Bermuda Travel.

Wedding Snapshot — Vows In Nature

Lori and Dave Nadolny WeddingWhen Dave and I got engaged we knew we wanted to get married in a sunny, tropical location. With the thought of inviting family and friends, we knew it had to be somewhere in close travel proximity that also offered beautiful beaches and a relaxed atmosphere. Bermuda was the perfect choice for us. The crystal blue water was the exact backdrop we wanted.

With the help of Linda Mitchell at Bermuda Travel and an amazing wedding coordinator our planning began. I'm a bit of a control freak, and while the thought of planning a wedding from afar was a bit daunting, I was pleasantly surprised to find out how easy it was.

Our perfect wedding day started out with breakfast with our 25 guests, a relaxing morning by the pool, a trip into St. George for hair appointments and a big pink bus arriving at the hotel to pick up the guests and wisk them off to Astwood Cove. The ceremony was on the cliffs overlooking the azure blue waters with rolling clouds in the distance. We couldn't have asked for a more perfect day. For us it was the exact wedding we wanted.

Many thanks to Bermuda Travel and the bridal, florists and other coordinators Linda Mitchel recommended! We couldn't have done it without you!

—Lori and Dave Nadolny - August 2008

A wedding on the water is particularly romantic and provides a backdrop like no other for your ceremony or post-ceremony celebration — set sail into the sunset as you celebrate your magical moment aboard Bermuda's sail or motor yachts.

Wedding Snapshot — Sail into Your New Life as Husband and Wife

Amanda and Bradley Katz WeddingBrad and I vacationed in Bermuda in May 2007. It was on a rocky outcrop overlooking the ocean at sunset that Brad proposed. It was one of the most memorable experiences of both our lives and instantly put Bermuda in a special place in our hearts. We always knew we wanted to get married abroad and Bermuda was the perfect spot. In addition, living on the U.S east coast made Bermuda a close and convenient choice to have our friends and family join us as wedding guests. We researched other tropical locales for a destination wedding but always came back to Bermuda. It didn't take long to settle on our decision to get married in Bermuda and it's one we'll never regret.

Shortly after deciding on Bermuda for our destination wedding, we discovered a website for Bermuda Travel specialist, Linda Mitchell of Bermuda Travel. She worked exclusively with travel to Bermuda and was crucial in helping us plan our dream wedding. From personal recommendations to expert advice, Linda ensured every travel detail was met with the highest standards of quality. Linda also introduced us to Melanie Mayer, the wedding coordinator aboard the luxury yacht Venetian where we held our ceremony and reception. Melanie assisted us with nearly every detail of our wedding on the Venetian, and although we were a thousand miles away from Melanie, she made planning our wedding easy and carefree. It was a lot of work but it was a day we'll never forget, and neither will our guests. If we had to do it all over again, we wouldn't change a thing...and we have Linda and Melanie to thank for that.

With only a dozen guests, our wedding was small and intimate. We had the people we loved the most with us, to witness what would be the most important day in our lives so far. Our wedding was elegant and sophisticated but felt more like a casual get-together to everyone in attendance, including us. From the flowers and cake to the gourmet dinner and wine, it was an event to remember. We'll never forget looking out at the harbor sunset, after exchanging rings as husband and wife, and thinking how perfect our wedding turned out to be. The pictures and stories speak for themselves. We've shared them with countless people curious to hear about our wedding day. Months later, we still feel an overwhelming sense of happiness when we remember our wedding day and hear the endless compliments from guests and friends alike. Bermuda gave us memories we will cherish forever and an experience we think most couples only dream of on their wedding.

Suggestions from one bride to another....advice to make your destination wedding a success!

1. Don't sweat the small stuff. Every one of your guests will be happy just because they are in Bermuda. As long as you and your fiancé are happy, your guests will be happy too. If something goes wrong, no worries, as long as you two are there to say "I Do" with big smiles on your faces, that's all that really matters.

2. Be aware of tan lines. Nothing looks worse than tan lines or burnt skin so make sure you wear and reapply sun block as needed (or just limit your hours in the sun) before the wedding. And ladies, strapless bathing suits are a must if you are wearing a strapless dress. This will assure you are picture ready.

3. Forget the shoes. My husband and I are big shoe lovers so we planned to wear shoes at the reception but we did not. If you have a beach wedding, you'll want to be barefoot and you'll probably stay that way the rest of the night. We wore shoes at the after party but it was so perfect not to have to worry about shoes while saying our vows or while doing our first dance.

4. Do your research. The weather in Bermuda is great but depending on when you have your wedding and what time of day, it can be warm. Nothing is worse than wearing a heavy dress or suit that makes you feel confined and sweaty when it's warm outside. A beach bride and groom should feel comfortable and not afraid to show a little skin. You will be so happy you did when you're not sweating under your heavy attire.

5. Take time to enjoy the island. Its great to have activities for your guests but its also important to give them some time off to enjoy the island on their own. This also gives you and your fiancé time to relax and spend time together or with family. We took a day to spend time with our families separately and we (and our parents) are so glad we did.

Have your cake and eat it too.

Everyone will want a slice of a traditional Bermuda wedding cake. According to Bermudian tradition, both the bride and groom are treated to wedding cakes. The groom's is a plain pound cake covered with gold leaf, which represents wealth. And it's customary to place a symbol of the groom's favourite activity on top of the cake.

The bride has a fruitcake symbolizing fruitfulness in the marriage. It is covered with silver leaf, which represents purity. Atop the bride's cake should be a small vase containing a cedar branch, which symbolises Bermuda. In addition, you'll often find a potted cedar beside the bride's cake table. After the reception, the bride and groom plant the tree. It is believed that as the cedar grows, the marriage will flourish with strength and happiness. Whatever your taste in wedding cakes, your Bermuda wedding planner will make it happen!

Remember, one of the best reasons for marrying in Bermuda is that you're already in Heaven, so there's no need to go anywhere else for the honeymoon. Imagine your first days together as husband and wife, exploring Bermuda's magnificent beaches and attractions, as well as enjoying the island's fabulous culture and cuisine. Most island hotels offer value-added honeymoon packages, complete with champagne, flowers and candlelit dinners. Who needs Cupid's arrows when you've got the magic and romance found in Bermuda?

Moon Over Bermuda

The moongate, which symbolises peace, happiness and good luck for wedding couples, originated in China but has become an icon of romance in Bermuda.

In 1860, a Bermuda sea captain brought home a plan for a moongate he had seen in a Chinese garden. He drew the design for a circular gateway and then set about building it himself. The result was an eye-catching structure that other Bermudians quickly adopted.

Unlike Chinese arches, Bermuda moongates are made of stone, not wood. Islanders believe that when a couple makes a wish as they pass hand-in-hand through a moongate, they are guaranteed everlasting happiness and good fortune throughout their marriage. For that reason, many locals and visitors exchange their wedding vows in front of a moongate. Lucky? Perhaps. Romantic? You bet!
