Say goodbye to stress in Devonshire, where you can lose your worries as you explore green, rolling countryside, marshes and nature reserves.
Palm Grove Gardens on South Road features floral delights and several charming ponds brimming with water lilies and hyacinths. Palm Grove is privately owned, but visitors may view the gardens at no cost Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Edmund Gibbons Nature Reserve, with its pond, marshlands, native plants, and migratory birds, lies just east of the gardens on South Road. The 22-acre Arboretum on Montpelier Road, off Middle Road, features lovely ornamental and fan palms, Poinciana and golden shower trees, and Bermuda olivewood and black ebony trees.
Devonshire also boasts its share of historic sites. Old Devonshire Church on Middle Road is thought to date from the early 17th century. Reconstructed after an explosion in 1970, the church is a national icon.
Also worth a visit is Palmetto House on North Shore Road. It's one of the few remaining examples of an early 18th-century cruciform house. You can tour its three main rooms from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Thursdays.
