Dressing for Every Occasion
By Julia Currelly
I came across this quote on a website. As Susan Heller is a travel writer, I’m sure it’s very practical advice — especially for a trip, let’s say, to Africa or the Himalayas. The good news is that this is NOT advice you need to follow for a trip to Bermuda.
After all, vacation is all about fun, which makes it the perfect time to bring out the fantasy version of yourself to play. So if you’re wondering, my fellow fashionista, what to wear and where to wear it in Bermuda, share my addiction with the list below of my favourite trends and my favourite Bermuda places to wear them:
Pretty Girly
Shopping in Hamilton, Bermuda National Gallery and Afternoon Tea at the Fairmont Hamilton Princess Hotel. Fashion’s new mood takes us away from edgy sexuality to a frothy, frilly, ultra-feminine sensibility this year. Pearls, bows, chiffon, silk, lace, floral prints and soft colours feature with full skirts, delicate knits and romantic details. There’s nothing more refreshing to the tongue than a hot cup of tea after a hard day’s shopping — and just as refreshing to the eyes will be me in my Valentino floral dress with a pearl-trimmed cardigan and Prada booties.
Dresses
Brunch at The Reefs and a visit to the Lighthouse. The dress made a huge comeback over the past year, and shows no signs of retreating anytime soon. Shoulder details are important, along with prints and embellishments of stones, beading, feathers and bows. Those nude patent shoes that everyone (and I mean everyone) is wearing are perfect to pair with all the dresses. Jimmy Choo is where I go for the ideal pair.
Military / Utility
National Museum of Bermuda at the Royal Naval Dockyard. This trend is all about luxe utility with an easy feminine edge. Designers took inspiration from the military and then refined it. Don’t wear it as if you’ve just left boot camp! Cargo trousers are realised in silk, camouflage prints are covered in sequins and jackets are embellished with epaulets and gold trim in a clean and polished manner. Choose one utility piece per outfit, and then wear a sequin bow headband to glam it up.
Volume
Dinner at Fourways or drinks at Newstead Belmont Hill's Happy Hour. Draping pleats and oversized garments bring on the glamour. Balance is the key issue here. Wear your dolman sleeve top with skinny trousers and your pleated, draped harem trousers with a fitted tee. Voluminous tops and dresses are tamed with a belt to create a waist and avoid that “floating tent” look.
Prints
Verdmont, sailing cruise at sunset and dinner at Harbourfront Restaurant. Eye-catching, bold prints of every ilk dominate the runway: vivid florals, crisp geometrics, global tribal influences, funky Ikats and the newest trend — digitally manipulated prints. In punchy intense colours, these prints offer an alternative to the sweet pastels of the girly trend. Animal prints make a huge resurgence, but be careful: A little of this goes a long way. One new way to wear prints is to mix them: a geometric print or stripy tee with a floral skirt is fresh and easy.
’80s
Moped riding and a trip to the beach. This works well for casual and dressed-up affairs. Leggings, racerback tanks and neon colours are back from the ’80s! Colour blocking and black trims on fun, fruity colours bring this trend to life. Shoulder pads are a key element, although this time around they are a little more subtle and a lot more architectural! Bold colours and clear jewellery are important for your accessories. Look for Lucite and Plexiglas. I’m going to be zipping along the South Shore Road on my bike wearing my Trina Turk hot pink racerback tank and toting my Prada clear handbag!
So I say “boo, hiss” to Ms. Heller’s packing advice — fill those cases! She might be on to something with the “twice the money” part of her advice, though. After all, there are great shops in Bermuda, and a girl can never have too much fashion!
Relax, enjoy, save and see Bermuda by bus. A blue or pink pole indicates bus stops. If the pole is topped with blue, the bus travels from Hamilton; if the pole is topped pink, the route is toward Hamilton.
