Currency Gets a Makeover

Bermudian money had been working very hard since it was first introduced in 1969. So in 2009, it seemed like a good year for an extreme makeover, currency edition.

On Feb. 20, 2009, the Bermuda Monetary Authority celebrated 40 years of service, just as Bermuda was celebrating 400 years of settlement. So BMA used these milestones to launch its first-ever redesign of the islands' banknotes.

"The designs are changing to give the notes a truly modern look, whilst retaining the truly Bermudian look and colours," explains Marcia Woolridge-Allwood, the director of corporate and financial services for BMA. Objectives of the makeover were to provide distinctly Bermudian designs, enhance national pride and ease of identification, inhibit counterfeiting with new security features, and make the notes more durable in the subtropical climate.

According to Woolridge-Allwood, the new bills were designed by Eugene Borthwick, who retired recently as senior designer at De la Rue Currency, in the United Kingdom, a banknote producer involved with 150 national currencies. New notes were first revealed publicly on Nov. 24, 2008, and began circulating in 2009. Collector sets can be purchased from the Bermuda Monetary Authority. (notesandcoins@bma.bm, www.bma.bm)

The new colours and images are:

$2 turquoise, bluebird, Clocktower at Royal Naval Dockyard, statue of Neptune
$5 pink, blue marlin, Horseshoe Bay Beach, Somerset Bridge
$10 purple, blue angel fish, the Deliverance, the Commissioner's House
$20 green, whistling frog, Gibb's Hill Lighthouse, St. Mark's Church
$50 yellow, longtail bird, St. Peter's Church in the town of St. George
$100 red, cardinal, the House of Assembly

A new coin celebrates the hawksbill turtle, and more commemorative products for the 400th anniversary will be released.
