Everyday Shorts
 You may run into businessmen on Bermuda wearing conservative blazers with well-tailored shorts. Though amusing to foreigners, shorts make perfectly acceptable business wear in Bermuda and are welcome at parties, restaurants, boardrooms — even the House of Assembly.
Around May, the men of Front Street drop their trousers in favour of shorts in colours from staid grey to colourful plaids, with a 3-inch hem three inches above the knee, sometimes pleated for business, worn with a blazer, Oxford shirt, regimental tie and knee socks.
Nineteenth-century military uniforms issued for the tropical and arid corners of the British Empire inspired Bermuda shorts. In the early 20th century, tailors working amid the bankers and businessmen of Hamilton adapted the design in various colours with finer fabrics like Irish linen and lightweight wools. They added the blazer or sport coat, plus the tie and the turndown of the socks, establishing a unique style well suited to Bermuda. Appropriate shoes are loafers with tassels.
But alas, with so many air-conditioned buildings today, the signature style is in decline. Some locals even see shorts as a symbol of colonialism. Others eschew them because of knobby knees.
