Bursting with sophisticated merchandise from all over the world, Bermuda’s shops bustle with must-have luxurious items for everyone.

Brimming with family-owned shops and boutiques, Front Street, the epicentre of shopping in Hamilton, may seem quaint to visitors, even anachronistic. But look beyond the Norman Rockwell facade and you may find a bit of the glamour you have come to expect from Regent Street or Fifth Avenue.
Bermuda may look small, but it abounds with “shopportunities.” Prices are often lower than you would pay back home, because Bermuda charges no sales tax and reduces or eliminates the duties tacked onto luxury goods such as watches, perfumes and fine china.
More important, you find treasures here that simply do not exist at your hometown mall: fine British textiles, handcrafted jewellery, unique Bermudian arts and crafts, and island-made foods and spirits. And of course, you’ll want to pick up the perfect pair of Bermuda shorts.
Frangipani
Ambience, furthermore, proves equally important as selection and price, as Barbara Finsness well knows. “Retail has to be an experience, almost a social affair,” says Finsness, who owns and designs at The Island Shop. “Everything has to be just right in our stores, from the music to the flowers. We’re constantly changing our displays so that the people who come into the store are seeing something new.”
Bermuda shopping is about browsing in homey department stores, not elbowing your way through outlet depots. It’s about discovering boutiques in out-of-the-way alleys, not driving for miles to reach malls packed with cookie-cutter chain stores. Hamilton is home to a number of fine shops. In St. George’s you‘ll find many quaint boutiques. Stores at Royal Naval Dockyard offer everything from specialty gourmet foods to handmade jewellery.
What should you bring home? Here are several great gifts you may want to consider stowing in the suitcase.
Ready to shop? Here are just some of the gifts you may want to take home after an unforgettable holiday in Bermuda.

Antiques
Steeped in history, Bermuda teems with time-tested treasures, from Queen Anne chairs and 18th-century engravings to old navigational maps and hand-blown bottles salvaged from shipwrecks. Half the fun is finding them.

Apparel
Fashions from Bermuda and around the world are sure to please any clothes hound. Boutiques and department stores stock a full range of designer duds, as well as casual clothing and beachwear. Imported textiles are sturdy and finely tailored. Look for British fabrics, as well as fine Irish and Icelandic woollen goods, at prices often lower than in the United States or Europe.
Arts & Crafts
Bermuda’s literary heritage is rich as well. Among writers who have drawn inspiration from the islands are Mark Twain, Rudyard Kipling, C.S. Forester, Edna Ferber, E.B. White and Katherine Anne Porter.
Bermudians write lovingly of their island home. For an insider’s look, check out The Story of Bermuda and Her People by William Zuill; The Magic of Bermuda by David Raine; Hiking Bermuda by Cecile Davidson; Into the Bermuda Triangle by Gian Quasar; and the illustrated children’s book My Bermuda ABC by Dana Cooper.

Duty-Free
Like most islands, Bermuda has an outstanding selection of duty-free items, such as clothing, accessories, jewellery, watches, cosmetics, perfumes and, of course, spirits. Yet what sets Bermuda apart from other destinations is that this isle nation enjoys great imports from Great Britain, especially when it comes to quality textiles such as fine English wool, Scottish tartans and even Irish linen.

Food and Spirits
Bring back a taste of Bermuda with island-made goodies such as sweet local honey, sherry-pepper condiments, jams and marmalades, and Bermuda rum cakes. Such delicacies are found in stores in Hamilton, St. George’s and Royal Naval Dockyard. Swing by any supermarket and come out with culinary treasures.
A uniquely Bermudian souvenir is a bottle of Gosling’s Black Seal, Bermuda’s signature rum. Add it to Barritts Ginger Beer for a traditional Dark ’n’ Stormy cocktail.
Bacardi International Limited maintains worldwide headquarters in Bermuda, so you find a wide range of spirits at reduced prices — Bacardi Superior, Bacardi 151 and Bacardi Añejo, plus a wide range of other spirits.
Remember you'll need rum to make Bermuda's famous signature drink, the Dark 'n StormyTM.
Fill highball glass with ice, add 1.5 oz of Gosling's Black Seal Rum, top with Ginger Beer. Finish by squeezing a lemon wedge around the rim of the glass and garnish with lemon wedge.
Fragrances
Designer scents and cosmetics take centre stage at many of Bermuda’s department stores. Find the brands available in New York City and London but at lower prices. Locally made fragrances also serve as wonderful gifts to remind you of Bermuda. Lilies, oleanders, jasmine, sweet peas and passionflowers are among Bermuda’s favourite scents. Men appreciate shaving lotions bearing the scent of cedar.
AS Cooper & Sons Ltd.
Home Furnishings
Whether you wish to decorate just the dining table or an entire room, you can’t go wrong with that one-of-a-kind Bermuda look. Boutiques here carry handcrafted pottery and blown glass, as well as a wide range of adornments by the world’s finest designers.
China, silverware, crystal and porcelain are plentiful in Bermuda at attractive prices. Danish flatware, Wedgwood plates and Villeroy & Boch tableware are popular choices. And look for exquisite Waterford, Swarovski, Lalique and Baccarat crystal, along with Lladró and Hummel collectibles.
Jewellery and Watches
Shops and department stores here carry all the best-known brands at discounts you do not find back home. Also tempting are uniquely Bermudian pieces that often incorporate treasures from the sea: colourful shells, iridescent mother-of-pearl, polished sea glass, even Spanish doubloons salvaged from centuries-old wrecks.
The Island Shop/Cathi McClure
Tobacco
Cigar aficionados will find Bermuda to be the perfect place to smoke that hand-rolled Cuban without censure. Although illegal to bring into the United States, Cuban cigars are sold, smoked and enjoyed freely in Bermuda. If you want to bring some great smokes back to the States, the cigar shops here have plenty of other brands available.
Some of the great brands you will want to sample include Montecristo, Romeo y Julieta, Trinidad, Cohiba, Partagas and Hoyo de Monterrey. And don’t overlook Punch English Briar and Turkish Meerschaum pipes.

Jo Birdsey Linberg, daughter of Bermuda’s first modern artist, Alfred Birdsey, painted for many years with her father at the Birdsey Studio before his death in 1996. Today she continues the family tradition. Created predominately in watercolour, her impressionistic landscapes, figurative paintings and whimsical animals reflect her mentor’s artistic legacy through simple lines and orientally inspired brushwork, but they also establish Jo’s own artistic niche and creative stamp. Her watercolours have been exhibited in Bermuda and overseas, whilst collected and commissioned internationally. Jo’s paintings reflect her love of life and Bermuda. Her father’s spirit is alive and well in her humour, hospitality and creative energy. The Birdsey Studio, in the back garden of the family home, remains a special place for many, with its tranquil natural setting and rather unusual appearance.
