Bermuda may be small, but its 21 square miles are well stocked with a variety of stores and boutiques where visitors can find designer duds, rare island treasures and those familiar labels... sans the familiar sales tax.

Travellers accustomed to the finer things in life experience pure retail bliss while strolling around Bermuda’s biggest shopping districts: the city of Hamilton, the historic Town of St. George and the bustling Royal Naval Dockyard. Many fine stores are also located inside major hotels and throughout the island. The best part of shopping here is that there is no sales tax. That means that you’re likely find some of your favourite brands at substantially lower prices than at home, while also getting a great deal on one-of-a-kind items.
When it comes to shopping, Hamilton’s Front and Reid Streets offer so much variety. Family-owned stores, chic boutiques and plenty of luxury goods can be found here, rivalling the shopping meccas of Fifth Avenue or Rodeo Drive.
The more laid-back Town of St. George, while quiet and relaxed, has become Bermuda’s other major shopping hub. Its notable architectural landmarks and long history make it the perfect place for fascinating curiosities, incredible artwork and antiques, and beautiful crafts. Indeed, mighty St. George is a sought-after retail destination.

Meanwhile, the stores at Royal Naval Dockyard on Ireland Island hold up the West End of Bermuda as a premier shopping district. You’ll find unique artworks in this epicentre, as establishments such as the Bermuda Craft Market and the Clocktower Mall encourage the creation and sale of locally made crafts.
So many options, so little time! Here are a few ideas for great buys and gifts to bring back home.
Ready to shop? Here are just some of the gifts you may want to take home after an unforgettable holiday in Bermuda.

Antiques
Steeped in history, Bermuda teems with time-tested treasures, from Queen Anne chairs and 18th-century engravings to old navigational maps and hand-blown bottles salvaged from shipwrecks. Half the fun is finding them.

Apparel
In Bermuda you will find much more than a great pair of shorts. Sure, the island has fantastic and high-end beachwear, but its stores and boutiques also carry the latest fashion and designer collections, accessories and fine leather and luxury goods that are sure to please even discerning fashionistas. Imported textiles are sturdy and finely tailored. Look for British fabrics, as well as fine Irish and Icelandic woollen goods, at prices often lower than in the United States or Europe.
Arts & Crafts
Bermuda’s thriving population of local and internationally known artists create a bustling art scene that attracts shoppers, dealers and collectors from all over the globe. Island-inspired paintings, sculptures, crafts, print and photography art are true testaments to the island’s cultural boom.
Winslow Homer and Georgia O’Keeffe are amongst the world-famous artists drawn to Bermuda by its evocative sunlight. Today Bermuda’s arts community thrives with homegrown talent. In Hamilton, St. George and Royal Naval Dockyard, look for galleries and workshops showcasing Bermudian paintings, sculptures and fine arts.
Artisans create a range of Bermudiana — crafts uniquely linked to island life. Carvings in Bermuda cedar are especially popular with visitors. Equally prized is Bermudian pottery, often decorated with depictions of native wildlife or marine themes. Children are delighted with Bermudian miniatures such as pink houses and dolls fashioned from banana leaves. From handcrafted candles to ceramics, decorative painting, and even glass jewellery, you are bound to take home the perfect souvenir.

Books
Bermuda's literary heritage is rich as well. Among writers who have drawn inspiration from the islands are Mark Twain, Rudyard Kipling, C.S. Forester, Edna Ferber, E.B. White and Katherine Anne Porter.
Bermudians write lovingly of their island home. For an insider's look, check out The Story of Bermuda and Her People by William Zuill, The Magic of Bermuda by David Raine, Hiking Bermuda by Cecile Davidson, Into the Bermuda Triangle by Gian Quasar and the illustrated children's book My Bermuda ABC by Dana Cooper.
Duty-Free
Like most islands, Bermuda has an outstanding selection of duty-free items, such as clothing, accessories, jewellery, watches, cosmetics, perfumes and, of course, spirits. Yet what sets Bermuda apart from other destinations is that this isle nation enjoys great imports from Great Britain, especially when it comes to quality textiles such as fine English wool, Scottish tartans and even Irish linen.

Food and Spirits
Bring back a taste of Bermuda with island-made goodies such as sweet local honey, sherry-pepper condiments, jams and marmalades, and Bermuda rum cakes. Such delicacies are found in stores in Hamilton, St. George and Royal Naval Dockyard. Swing by any supermarket and come out with culinary treasures!
A uniquely Bermudian souvenir is a bottle of Gosling’s Black Seal, Bermuda’s signature rum. Add it to Barritts Ginger Beer for a traditional (and delicious) Dark ’n’ Stormy cocktail.
Remember you'll need rum to make Bermuda's famous signature drink, the Dark 'n StormyTM.
Fill highball glass with ice, add 1.5 oz of Gosling's Black Seal Rum, top with Ginger Beer. Finish by squeezing a lemon wedge around the rim of the glass and garnish with lemon wedge.
Fragrances
Designer scents and cosmetics take centre stage at many of Bermuda’s department stores and boutiques such as The Bermuda Perfumery. Find the brands available in New York City and London, but at lower prices. Locally made fragrances also serve as wonderful gifts to remind you of Bermuda. Lilies, oleanders, jasmine, sweet peas and passionflowers are among Bermuda’s favourite scents. Men appreciate shaving lotions bearing the scent of cedar.

Home Furnishings
Whether you wish to decorate just the dining table or an entire room, you can’t go wrong with that one-of-a-kind Bermuda look. Boutiques here carry handcrafted pottery and blown glass, as well as a wide range of adornments by the world’s finest designers.
China, silverware, crystal and porcelain are plentiful in Bermuda at attractive prices. Danish flatware, Wedgwood plates and Villeroy & Boch tableware are popular choices. Look for exquisite Waterford, Swarovski, Lalique and Baccarat crystal, along with handcrafted Lladró and Hummel collectibles.
Jewellery and Watches
Fine timepieces and jewellery glitter throughout Bermuda, with a large selection of everything from gold and silver to more ostentatious pieces adorned with Tahitian pearls and Autralian opal. Also tempting are uniquely Bermudian pieces that often incorporate treasures from the sea: colourful shells, iridescent mother-of-pearl, polished sea glass, even Spanish doubloons salvaged from centuries-old wrecks.

Tobacco
Most visitors won’t want to miss the world-class tobacco stores on the island. Especially enthralling is that little pleasure forbidden to Americans: authentic and aromatic Cuban cigars. Although illegal to bring into the United States, Cuban cigars are sold, smoked and enjoyed freely in Bermuda. If you want to bring some great smokes back to the States, the cigar shops here have plenty of other brands available, including Montecristo, Romeo y Julieta, Trinidad, Cohiba, Partagas and Hoyo de Monterrey.

Harbour Nights: A Fun-Filled Street Festival for the Entire Family
Courtesy of the Bermuda Chamber of Commerce
The scenic harbour front is closed to all vehicular traffic and offers fun for the entire family every Wednesday from 7-10 p.m. between April and October. Locals and tourists gather to enjoy a wide variety of Bermuda's unique culture — including live entertainment, more than 100 street vendors, children's activities, an extensive food court, shopping, dining and more.
Harbour Nights features a variety of activities from train rides to face painting, and the live music, local bands and musicians will keep you dancing in the streets. Besides Gombey performances, steel pans, dancers and craft demonstrations, revellers enjoy the Bermuda Regiment band, which marches down Front Street in full regimental apparel with pipes and drums.
Children can choose from a range of activities at the Children's Court, including fun castles in all sizes, the ever-popular train, face painting, tattoos and hair braiding.
With so many activities, visitors inevitably work up an appetite. The food court fills the bill. Here you'll find Bermudian and international specialties, including the popular fried fish, as well as a range of snacks, refreshing drinks and cool treats. The restaurants — many of which overlook Front Street — also serve full dinners and offer good selections of wine, beer and cocktails. For more information, contact the Bermuda Chamber of Commerce at 295-4201.
Getting there: The great news is that every Wednesday, Sea Express is putting in extra ferries for the event, so it's even easier to get from St. George's or Dockyard to Hamilton. From Dockyard, ferries will run every hour (except between 6:30 and 8:30 p.m.); there will just be a 7 p.m. ferry. Returning ferries will be every hour until 11 p.m. From St. George, there will be a 6:05 p.m. ferry to Hamilton and a return ferry at 10 p.m. direct to St. George with no stops along the way.

The Somers Wharf Shopping and Dining Complex, created in 1978 by developing the historic St. George waterfront, sits on land reclaimed from St. George’s Harbour. Today Somers Wharf is situated ideally in the middle of St. George’s, within easy walking distance of bus, ferry and cruise ship terminals, idyllically on the harbour-front. A vast selection of apparel can be found in the shops and boutiques along the wharf, as well as treasures like fine crystal, artists’ collections, and Bermudian crafts and souvenirs. A dockside pub satisfies hunger and thirst.
