The Bermuda International Film Festival, which is recognised by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences as a qualifying festival for the Short Film Academy Award, screens some 30 shorts, plus seven documentary features and seven narrative features in competition.
Move over Cannes and Sundance: The reviews are in, and the Bermuda International Film Festival ranks amongst the world's finest tributes to cinema. Showcasing the best in cinema for more than a dozen years, the annual event salutes more than 80 films in four theatres over nine days.
Recognised by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences as a Qualifying Festival, films that make their debut at BIFF can be nominated for an Oscar in the Short Film category.
In addition to documentaries and shorts, screenings also include the World Cinema Showcase, BIFF Kids films and the popular midnight madness screenings.
Judged by an international advisory board, four prestigious prizes are awarded for best narrative feature, best documentary feature and best short. Picking up the coveted Mary-Jean Mitchell Green Award for Best Narrative Feature in 2009, Moscow, Belgium by director Christophe Van Rompaey is a portrait of a woman on the verge of a nervous breakdown. Best Documentary kudos went to Garbage Dreams, a compelling portrait of the zaballeen, who collect and recycle Cairo’s trash.
In addition to the March festival for adults, BIFF Children's Film Festival is staged in October. Also popular are the monthly BIFF Film Series, and each summer the BIFF Film Academy offers eight weeks of film production camp for youths.
Theatres hosting screenings include: the Specialty Cinema (formerly Little Theatre) and the Liberty Theatre, both in Hamilton; Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute Theatre; and Southside Cinema in St. David’s.
The 13th annual Bermuda International Film was held March 19–25, 2010. For more information, visit www.bermudafilmfest.com.

Relax, enjoy, save and see Bermuda by bus. A blue or pink pole indicates bus stops. If the pole is topped with blue, the bus travels from Hamilton; if the pole is topped pink, the route is toward Hamilton.
