A Holiday Extravaganza
Bermuda's colourful Christmas Boat Parade signals the start of a festive season.
By Ian Coles
The Christmas Boat Parade is one of the most spectacular events of Bermuda's holiday season. The 2009 parade marked the Grand Finale of Bermuda's 400th Anniversary Celebration. Going forward the parade committee will organise the event every other year, so the next parade takes place the second Saturday in December 2011 (December 10th, 2011).
In past parades, more than 70 craft have set sail from the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club to make their way past Front Street, around the foot of Hamilton Harbour and the Harbour Road shoreline to Darrell's Wharf. From there, the boat parade crosses to the Fairmont Hamilton Princess Hotel and then heads back to the Yacht Club.
The parade is almost two miles long with more than 1,000 people aboard the parade yachts. This is Bermuda's biggest spectator event, with an estimated 20,000 people watching from vantage points around the harbour. The best views for the parade are from near the flagpole on Front Street, Albouy's Point or Harbour Road.
The Marine and Ports tender Dragon leads the parade, with its fire hoses spraying water 70 feet up into the night sky. An unforgettable fireworks display from the middle of the harbour rounds off the evening's entertainment.
Locals, corporate sponsors, charities, social groups and visitors are encouraged to participate in this wonderful winter event by entering a chartered or private boat or yacht.

Relax, enjoy, save and see Bermuda by bus. A blue or pink pole indicates bus stops. If the pole is topped with blue, the bus travels from Hamilton; if the pole is topped pink, the route is toward Hamilton.
