Know Where to Find Bermuda's Happiest Hours
To help you find Bermuda’s best happy hours and nightlife, here are some of our favourites.
Hamilton. Flanagan’s, an authentic Irish pub, lures business types with live entertainment and a balcony viewing Hamilton Harbour. Down one level, Flanagan’s Outback Sports Bar lays out a couple dozen flat-screen TVs tuned to every sporting event you can think of. (69 Front St.)
The Pickled Onion sets a mood with warm wood, 1950s-style furnishings and a specialty in martinis (53 Front St.). Speaking of martinis, The New York Times recommends Bermudiana Road and singles out Ferrari Bar @ LV’S, with dim mood lighting, a handsome thirty-something crowd and “nooks for canoodling” (12 Bermudiana Road), and Opus Café and Lounge, a thumping cocktail bar. Eat, play and drink at The Dog House (93 Front Street). As the island’s newest addition, this late night favourite (open until 3 a.m.!) boasts the largest variety of beer on tap in Bermuda, a live DJ, band, music and game machines.
If High Tea is your version of happy hour, head to the Heritage Court at The Fairmont Hamilton Princess, celebrating its 125th anniversary. Teas include black, green, herbal, fruit and a custom blend called Princess Bermuda. Routinely voted tops in tea, the Heritage Court complements the civilising beverage with finger sandwiches, scones and pastries made in its own pastry shop. For something stronger, slide out to the patio and start your summer weekends with music, cocktails and the popular Friday night barbecue. (76 Pitts Bay Road)
Paget. Complete with sushi bar and takeout shop, the up-and-coming happy hour in Paget would be Café 4 in the Fourways Inn. Manager Andreas Detzer says, “We are just beginning and our feedback is already tremendous.” He’s shooting for best and friendliest service, finest and most creative foods, and competitive prices. Indoor/outdoor dining offers barbecue as well as wines, cocktails and celebrity DJs who spin each Friday after 9 p.m. (1 Middle Road)
On Fridays 5–9 p.m., hop the private water shuttle from a dock next to the Hamilton ferry terminal, purchase some discount happy-hour tickets onboard and spend them at a poolside terrace bar overlooking the harbour at Newstead Belmont Hills. They feature live entertainment by bands such as Working Title, a versatile five-piece group that plays jazz and rock. (27 Harbour Road)
Royal Naval Dockyard. Craft beer lovers trek out to Dockyard Brewing Company for happy hour. The microbrewery is housed appropriately in an 18th-century cooperage at the Frog & Onion Pub, where the decor is exposed stone walls and antique barrels. Partner Carol West describes the complex as “the most unique pub in Bermuda,” and the hyperbole is fair. Besides well-known English and Irish ales to complement the pub fare, six fascinating, handcrafted beers issue forth from the on-site brewery.
Southampton. Happy hour in Southampton means the other Fairmont, with hot and cool running lounges. When feeling hot, check out the Cellar, a dance club with top-40 hits. Hear DJs, VJs and live performers like Bermudian Tailor Rankin, who makes the violin sing. When feeling cool, head to Jasmine, a sophisticated lounge with an elaborate tea service each afternoon and martinis later in the evening, with snacks, sandwiches, salads, desserts and Cuban cigars. Relax, enjoy, save and see Bermuda by bus. A blue or pink pole indicates bus stops. If the pole is topped with blue, the bus travels from Hamilton; if the pole is topped pink, the route is toward Hamilton.
