If you believe that drinking watery mass-market beer is sacrilegious, then make the pilgrimage to Dockyard Brewing Company to sample five handcrafted brews in a perfect setting. Behind the Frog & Onion Pub at Royal Naval Dockyard, the pub's joint venture with North Rock Brewing Company has been operating since 2005.
The microbrewery's lone full-time employee, brewmaster Neil Playfoot, and its principals, David Littlejohn from North Rock and Carol West from Frog & Onion, are all Bermudians. Their produce is enjoyed mainly within the Frog & Onion and North Rock restaurants, although Swizzle Inn now serves Dockyard's new Somer's Amber Ale.
Flavours currently available from Dockyard Brewing Company include:
Whale of a Wheat. A typical German Hefeweizen, this light, refreshing ale is made with wheat and barley malts from Europe and hops from Germany. Relish this summer thirst quencher with a slice of lemon.
St. David's Light. Brewed Pilsner style, this straw-coloured beer is hopped delicately, giving it a crisp flavour with a dry finish, great with many lighter meals.
Somer's Amber Ale. Dockyard's flagship ale, a traditional copper-coloured English bitter created using the finest hops, is a crowd pleaser enjoyed with all foods.
Trunk Island Pale Ale. This flavourful, well-hopped brew comes packed with a sharp, bitter finish. British soldiers in India would appreciate this ale, complementing a variety of meals.
Black Anchor Porter. A classic London porter, this rich, dark, medium-hopped beer goes well with heavy game pies and meats. (234-2900, www.frogandonion.bm)
