Steeped in Tradition
 The English tradition of relaxing with a cup of tea and a small nibble in the afternoon, when energy levels need reviving, is still a big part of the day in Bermuda.
“Of course, people have to work now, but you will see families have tea with sandwiches and scones at 3 or 4 p.m., especially on Sunday afternoons in their homes,” says Fairmont Hamilton Princess concierge Carlos Trott. Afternoon tea has been served since The Fairmont Hamilton Princess opened in 1885. In fact, it is such a tradition at the resort’s Heritage Court, he says, that reservations are a must.
At The Fairmont, tea is served in the Heritage Court’s elegant British Colonial ambience with a view of the water and the serene koi pond. A wide range of teas are served with crumpets, pastries, scones with Devonshire clotted cream, biscuits and finger sandwiches from 2:30 to 5 p.m. The days of garden dresses and gloves are gone, but children often dress up, Trott says. The art of tea can be practised anywhere, even in your own home. Tea is served all day at My Sereni-Tea on Reid Street in Hamilton. It is a popular stop for shoppers, who like to relax with a pot of tea and cake from the shop’s bakery. They have a choice of 70 teas, and the staff can guide you to the one perfect for you. At My Sereni-Tea, the belief is that any time is tea time, says Welsh owner Deryn Higgins. “Our tea shop and lounge is created for a stress-free, peaceful environment, where you can take a break and have a nice pot of tea.” (296-2114)
