Easy Rider: Getting a Driver's License in Bermuda

By Graham Redford

One of the things you'll want to do after relocating is get your first “ride.”

The Transport Control Department (11 North St., Hamilton, 292-1271, www.tcd.gov.bm) administers the operation of all motor vehicles on Bermuda and issues driver's licences. The only driver's licence accepted here is the one issued by their office, which is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

You will be required to take a medical examination at a local doctor’s office. Also, you'll have to present a form stating your physical address and your land valuation assessment number. This form must be co-signed by your landlord. After this, you can take your electronic Interactive Traffic Code test. Don’t forget to bring a copy of your work permit and your passport.

If you plan on driving a car, you’ll then need to obtain a mandatory learner's permit ($23) from the TCD before getting an official licence. This requires at least two driving lessons with a qualified instructor. Once your paperwork and prerequisites are in order, you have the green light to make that appointment for your licence. The cost for the driving test is $43, and it costs $99.60 for a 10-year licence.

Hold on, there, Speed Racer. The process is still not over. You must also set up your annual vehicle licensing with your dealership, which depends on what category your vehicle falls under. The chart below details classes and costs.

Class A            $268.43
Class B            $367.11
Class C            $521.07
Class D            $643.44
Class E            $900.02
Class F             $1,042.13
Class G            $1,211.88
Class H            $1,476.36

Remember, the freedom that comes with your new ride is priceless. So go on, start the engine and motor away!

Relax, enjoy, save and see Bermuda by bus. A blue or pink pole indicates bus stops. If the pole is topped with blue, the bus travels from Hamilton; if the pole is topped pink, the route is toward Hamilton.
