Meet the Masters
Verdant landscapes, ocean vistas and glowing sunlight make Bermuda a haven for its painters and sculptors.
Desmond Fountain. A Fellow of the Royal Society of British Sculptors, with works in collections around the world, Fountain won acclaim for depictions of historic and contemporary personalities, including Princess Margaret, Felix Dennis, Mark Twain and Sir George Somers, seen in his richly illustrated book, Desmond Fountain: Sculptor. His bronzes are displayed throughout the colony. Born in Bermuda, he spent his early childhood in Africa. After winning his first award at 6 and selling his first piece at 11, he studied at Stoke-on-Trent and Exeter, in England. (292-3955, www.desmondfountain.com)
Katherine Harriott. A Flatts resident, Harriott won the first Masterworks Chairman's Prize for works that displayed "innovation, use of material, distinctive and convincing style, and serious intent." Pieces reflect ideas, concepts and social issues such as "women's ways of knowing," incorporating multiple mediums. She exhibits at various local galleries. (293-5841, www.katherineharriott.com)
Sheilagh Head. A leading landscape painter, Head captures the islands' unique light and colours. "She has the ability to interpret the world in a personal yet universal language," says Robert Rindler of the Rhode Island School of Design. Head studied painting and sculpture in Italy and England and has been selected to exhibit at the Mall Galleries in London. (238-0173, www.sheilaghhead.com)
Carole Holding. A masterful painter and chef, Holding celebrates Bermuda through multiple senses. In her shops, browsers find affordable lithographs, mugs, tea towels, place mats, jams, marmalades and rum cakes. Her perfumed soaps are inspired by Bermudian flowers. (296-3431, www.caroleholding.com)
Christa Leduc. Leduc works in stained glass and fashions jewellery from pieces of coloured glass. She also works with sea glass, seashells and found objects. Materials include pearls, mother-of-pearl, coral, jade, semiprecious stones, Baltic amber, black onyx and coins. Leduc combines the treasures with gold or silver wire to make pendants, bracelets, anklets, necklaces, earrings and pins. Her shop, CL Wire-art Jewellery, operates in Clocktower Mall at Royal Naval Dockyard. (234-5595, wireart@transact.bm)
Jo Birdsey Linberg. Daughter of the late Bermudian artist Alfred Birdsey, Birdsey Linberg works in Paget to create landscapes, water scenes, figurative studies and whimsical animals. The watercolours and oils celebrate life. Her Impressionistic style shows her father's influence, yet she has her own niche. Paintings grace private collections and have shown in the Bermuda Arts Centre at Dockyard. (236-6658, 236-5845, linberg@northrock.bm)
David Mitchell. A furniture designer in Flatts Village, Mitchell creates work to exacting standards. Known for crisp, contemporary designs in exotic woods and Bermudian cedar, he works with traditional joinery. His pieces are the delights of public, corporate and private collections around the world. (293-5841, 747-8270, dmitchell@northrock.bm)
Lisa-Anne Rego. Originality and quality characterise the works of Rego, amongst Bermuda's best artists. In her Dockyard gallery await such popular items as giclees, prints made with a sprayed-ink technique. Trained in Glasgow, Scotland, Rego has exhibited at the Bermuda National Gallery. (238-1407, 333-7346, www.lisarego.bm)
Roland Skinner. Capturing the islands' changing light, Skinner photographs Bermudian landscapes, flowers, trees and architecture. He attributes his style to being "born amongst beauty and having the eyes to see it." See his photos at Picturesque in Hamilton and Dockyard. (292-1452, www.picturesquebermuda.com, www.rolandskinner.com)
Charles Zuill. A founding trustee of the Bermuda National Gallery and former chairman of the Bermuda Arts Council, Zuill says, "My art is experimental and exploratory. I make use of a variety of materials in the creative process. Many of them are found in nature, but I also use traditional ... watercolours, oils and acrylics." His studio is in St. George's.
