Mementos Endure In Art Glass

Half the point of a fabulous vacation is to bring home memories. In Bermuda, art glass helps those memories endure for a lifetime.

Talented artists work at Dockyard Glassworks to create delightful shapes in hot-furnace glass, flame-worked glass, fused glass jewellery and glass beads. Much of it gets exported, but some of the finest pieces go on display for those who make the trek to Maritime Lane in historic Royal Naval Dockyard. Prices range from $15 to $225 for angelfish and dolphins, elephants and rabbits, plates and bowls, pendants and paperweights.

Wendy Avery and Tony Johns head the studio, opened in 1999. Starting as an apprentice in Essex, England, Johns has blown glass since 1984. He came to Bermuda in 1991 under the guidance of maestro Stephen Zawistowski and later opened his own studio on Grand Cayman Island. In 1999, Johns returned to Bermuda to partner with Avery in Dockyard Glassworks.

Their team includes Peter Zimmerman, who came to the studio from the United States, where he began working with glass in 1991. He arrived in Bermuda in 1997, where he introduced glass beads to the island.

Chrissie Howarth is a Bermudian artist who has been working with glass since 2001. She holds a degree in glass and ceramics from Buckinghamshire University in England. She experiments with patterns and colours while fusing glass in the kiln.

Bermudian Damon Simons also began his glasswork in 2001. He creates flame-worked tree frogs, reef fishes, ladybugs, lizards and others, using a propane burner.

Bermudians Alan James Avery and Roger Richardson are the studio's young apprentices, now developing their unique and colourful styles. (www.dockglass.com)
