Ticket to Cricket

"That's cricket," our elders used to say, meaning fair and honourable behaviour. The very name of the game has become a synonym for virtue. Playing well is as important as winning.

Originally expanded throughout the British Empire during the colonial period, cricket is now the second most popular sport in the world after football (soccer), and international test matches can go for days. The quadrennial ICC Cricket World Cup is the third-largest event in sport. In Bermuda, the high holy days are Emancipation Day and Somers Day (Thursday and Friday, August 2 and 3, 2012), known collectively as Cup Match, when non-cricket activity grinds to a halt.

Cricket is often compared to baseball, as they share many similarities. In fact, some consider baseball to be the American cousin of cricket; both sports are thought to have evolved from an older bat-and-ball game. Despite their common ancestry, cricket and baseball are noticeably different.

Cricket Basics:

  • Teams have 11 members.
  • The "pitcher" is called a bowler, who aims a ball at a "wicket" — three 32-inch-high stumps with "bails" (crosspieces) balanced on top.
  • The bowler aims to hit the wicket with the ball, whilst the "striker" (batsman), using a flat bat, protects the wicket by hitting the ball into the outfield.
  • The striker's partner, a non-striker, waits at the other end of the pitch.
  • When the striker hits the ball, he and the non-striker run to the other side of the pitch before the opposing team can return the ball. If they succeed, they complete a run. The team with the most runs wins.
