Swim Around
 Why confine yourself to the narrow rectangle of a pool when you can take off in the crystal-clear open ocean of Bermuda, free as Nemo with extra buoyancy from salt water?
That's the idea of the 22nd Annual Bermuda Round the Sound Swim to be held Sunday, Oct. 14, 2012, with races including .8K, 2K, 4K, 7.25K and 10K in the protected and picturesque Harrington Sound. Some 300 swimmers from Bermuda, United States, Great Britain and other countries participated last year. Participants have included Olympians, first-time racers, children and seniors. The event is presented by Aqua Moon Adventures, the Dolphin Swim Team of Bermuda and Bermuda Open Water Swimmers.
Randy Nutt, director of the event, says the swim offers the chance to "break the monotony of a pool, where you're staring at the black line at the bottom. In Bermuda, you're swimming with colourful fish and you see the exotic beauty of Bermuda. And the water is usually a very pleasant 78 F (25.5 C)."
 The swim is a social event that begins with a pasta party the night before the race so participants can load up on carbs. After the race, the Bermuda governor hands out trophies and silver cups. The Round the Sound Swim has raised $300,000 for Bermuda charities, as well as provided a great reason to swim in Bermuda.
"Bermuda offers one of the most beautiful destinations in open-water swimming, and because five different distances are offered, there is an event for everyone. Perfect water temperature and a crew of volunteers make this an event to put on your calendar," says Nutt, the 2008 World Open Water Swimming Man of the Year and owner of Aqua Moon Adventures, which offers open-water swim and dive trips.
