Shark Eye Tours

Most island vacations offer activities on land or in the nearby waters, and you have to plan accordingly. Time is valuable, and there are usually a great many interesting sights to see, so where do you begin? That choice is made simple with Shark Eye Tours, the specialty tour operator that features a 40-passenger tour bus that also doubles as a boat!

This hybrid vehicle, made of composite fiberglass, goes on land and sea, and gives visitors a unique perspective of Bermuda's Sandys Parish and its attractions. The Shark Eye bus/boat visits places not easily accessible from land, while offering a water tour experience second to none. It allows guests to skip the decision about whether to take a train tour, boat ride or tour bus to see the island's offerings. And here's another suggestion: The Shark Eye vessel is great for weddings, birthdays or any other type of celebration. Shark Eye also offers a scheduled dinner cruise.

The 45-minute, fully narrated musical tour begins at the Aids to Navigate ramp (ANTO), across from the Maritime Buoyage System Building and the Bermuda Clayworks, and shortly after enters the inlet at Kings Wharf leading to Great Sound and onto Waterford Bridge. Named after an English town, Waterford Bridge connects Watford Island and Somerset Island, heading right into Somerset Village.

Visitors can sit back and relax as the tour captain narrates island history as he navigates from sea to land and back. The vehicle averages around 30 miles per hour on land and about 10 knots at sea. Somerset Village has several notable sites, including Springfield and the Gilbert Nature Reserve, which contains an old plantation with a manor house dating back to the 1740s.

Scheduled visits include the National Museum of Bermuda (formerly the Maritime Museum) at the Royal Naval Dockyard, which contains exhibits of Spanish treasure, Bermudian boats and other nautical items. The tour highlights other areas such as Lagoon Park, The Royal Naval Cemetery and the Clocktower Building. You can spend virtually the entire day at the Dockyard, once a base for British naval warships and now one of Bermuda's top tourist attractions. The West End entertainment complex includes boutique stores at the Clocktower Mall and a Craft Market where you can interact with the artisans. One other surprising note: The famed Bermuda Triangle has its place at the Dockyard. The tip of the triangle is said to be here and is marked by a large hand-carved sculpture depicting the sea and listing all the vessels that have gone missing in the mysterious region that is bordered by Florida and Puerto Rico.

Don't miss out on a chance to book this one-of-a-kind adventure. Advance reservations are recommended because of the tour's popularity. Tickets for the tour can be purchased at the store located at #5 Quarry Lane, Warwick, or at Dockyard Visitors Information Centre. You also can call 74SHARK or 747-4275, or e-mail sharkeyetours@northrock.bm. If you want to get an idea of the overall experience, visit their website at www.sharkeyetours.com.

Relax, enjoy, save and see Bermuda by bus. A blue or pink pole indicates bus stops. If the pole is topped with blue, the bus travels from Hamilton; if the pole is topped pink, the route is toward Hamilton.
