Get ready to tee off at a world-class golf course. The government of Bermuda, owner of the prestigious Port Royal Golf Course, recently renovated these links and added features that you won't want to miss.
Designed by renowned golf architect Robert Trent Jones Sr., Port Royal first opened for play in 1970, received diligent maintenance throughout the years and reopened early in 2009. It features the same great layout, plus a wealth of improvements that veteran players will recognise and appreciate.
Grand new ocean views, opened up by removing a few trees, really catch the eye. Fairways, roughs and tee boxes have been newly covered with 419 Bermuda grass for better playability, and a new irrigation system keeps it all in top condition. Bunkers have been redesigned, and tees have been rebuilt. The greens, improved with TifEagle grass, now have a faster, more consistent roll. Yardage has increased to 6,842, the longest in Bermuda.
With all of this sparkling new character, the Port Royal Golf Course — a gem of which Bermudians are quite proud — again competes on the world stage, beginning with the PGA Grand Slam in 2009, held Oct. 19-21. Still, everyone is welcome to play, with standard greens fees at $225. (234-GOLF in advance, 234-0974/5 same day)
