Port Royal Golf Course Renovation

Port Royal opened for play in 1970. The architect, world-renowned Robert Trent Jones Sr., has been quoted as saying that Port Royal was his finest design outside of the mainland United States. As such, this facility has pedigree and prestige, and is an asset of which Bermuda can be proud.

The Board of Trustees, in conjunction with the Government of Bermuda, decided to renovate the existing layout of the Port Royal Golf Course to enhance the golfing experience for visitors and residents alike.

At 37 years old, the fabric of the course (tees, fairways, bunkers and greens) will undertake a major renovation to improve its playability. The layout of the course will be lengthened from 6,561 yards to 6,757 yards. The new layout will have little change as far as design is concerned, apart from two holes — numbers 12 and 13 — that will be reversed to a par 4 and 3, respectively. Other plans include installation of reverse osmosis plants and course irrigation throughout, rebuilding of all tees and greens, redesigning of all bunkers and re-turfing of greens with Tifeagle grass. Also, the tee boxes and greens surround will have Bermuda 419 grass.

Port Royal is open to resident and non-resident play. While the course has been maintained throughout the years with diligence and skill, the standard of tees, fairways and greens cannot be materially improved without the renovation programme.

Once Port Royal has been revamped as proposed, the course will be able to compete at a world level, and the marketing opportunities will be plentiful. The course is scheduled to reopen in January 2009. With Port Royal closed, Ocean View (295-9092 or 295-9093) and St. George's Golf Course (297-8067) will happily assist you with your tee time reservations.
