PGA Grand Slam of Golf Returns to Bermuda (again) October 18 - 19, 2011

Reserve your hotel well in advance for the 2011 PGA Grand Slam of Golf! The host for the 2011 tournament will once again be the Port Royal Golf Course, a public course that opened for play in 1970, and has undergone an extensive $13.7 million renovation. (www.portroyalgolf.bm)

The 36-hole championship, boasting the most difficult qualification requirement in the game — a major championship — will once again be televised to a worldwide audience by TNT. The total purse was $1.35 million, with the winner receiving $600,000, second place $300,000, third place $250,000 and fourth place $200,000.

The PGA Grand Slam of Golf, the season-ending showcase that features golf's premier foursome — the winners of the Masters, U.S. Open, British Open and PGA Championship — was held in Bermuda at Port Royal in 2009 and 2010. The 2010 PGA Grand Slam of Golf showcased an international foursome: go-cart enthusiast, 25-year old Martin Kaymerof of Dusseldorf, Graeme McDowell of Northern Ireland and a pro noted for his lazer like focus when playing, South African "Louis" Oosthuizen, and Ernie Els, a South African and brand new inductee into the Golf Hall of Fame (who replaced American Phil Mickelson a two-time Masters champ). In the end the it was Ernie Els (“The Big Easy”) who emerged as the winner of the 2010 tournament.

Lucas Glover won the tournament in 2009 with 5-under 66 for a five-shot win over Angel Cabrera .

Previous PGA in Bermuda

In October 2008 the tournament was played in Bermuda at the Mid Ocean Club after a successful debut at this private club in 2007. Padraig Harrington, for the second year in a row, lost the tournament in a sudden-death playoff, to Jim Furyk, former US Open winner.

The event, hosted by the Mid Ocean Club and the Fairmont Southampton in 2007, included PGA tour winners Zach Johnson, Angel Cabrera, Padraig Harrington and Jim Furyk, who replaced Tiger Woods. Angel Cabrera (U.S. Open Champion) won the two-day tourney by edging out Harrington (British Open Champion) on the final day in a three-hole playoff. It was the 25th edition of the tournament, attended by large crowds and televised by TNT, and was the first time the Grand Slam had been held outside the United States.

The Mid Ocean Club is a private course that can be played by invitation only and is ranked 45 on the list of top courses outside the U.S. by Golf Digest magazine. The 6,520-yard, par-70 layout was designed by Charles Blair Macdonald in 1921 and modified in the 1950s by the late noted golf architect Robert Trent Jones Sr. The club has hosted notable figures such as Presidents George H.W. Bush and Dwight Eisenhower, Winston Churchill, the Duke of Windsor and baseball icon Babe Ruth.

Bermuda is no stranger to hosting the finest players in the game," says PGA of America President Brian Whitcomb. "What remains constant is that this event features the game's stiffest entry requirement and is a treat for fans and players. The combination of a classic venue that challenged major champions, a large gallery and the outstanding support from the island's corporate community produced one of our all-time best PGA of Grand Slam of Golf events. We look forward with great excitement to bringing golf's major champions back next fall to Bermuda."
