A Day at the Races
As a solitary “rock” in the middle of a vast ocean with incredible currents and favourable trade winds, Bermuda has long been a seafarer’s haven. Perhaps that is why it is a stop (or a finish line) for many sailing and yachting competitions, including the celebrated Bermuda International Invitational Race Week.
Inaugurated by the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club in 1927, this event, known as the BIIRW, is one of the most prestigious tournaments on the international sailing calendar. Sponsored by Bermuda Premium Spirits, the local distributor for Bacardi rum, the BIIRW attracts top skippers from around the world who compete on the high seas every spring.
BIIRW 2012 welcomed competitors from United States, Great Britain, Norway, Sweden, and Canada, who joined the reliably strong contingent of Bermudian sailors vying for top honors. Bermuda’s own Eugene “Penny” Simmons, a six-time world champion and four-time Olympic Games competitor, and John Burnham from Fisher’s Island New York, a two-time champion, were some of this year's competitors.
A thrill for both experts in the sport and spectators who celebrate a sunny afternoon on the water, the BIIRW is a time-honoured tradition and guaranteed smooth sailing. Bermuda International Invitational Race Week 2012 was held April 22–27. For more information, visit biirw.bm.
